Background of the study
Islamic religious practices significantly shape community life, influencing both individual spirituality and collective identity. In Sagamu, these practices—ranging from daily prayers to communal religious events—foster social cohesion and a sense of belonging. The structured nature of Islamic rituals and the emphasis on community solidarity contribute to social integration, facilitating mutual support and collective responsibility (Ahmed, 2023). However, modern challenges such as urbanization and cultural diversification raise questions about the continued efficacy of traditional Islamic practices in promoting social unity (Bello, 2024). Recent research has focused on adapting these practices to contemporary societal needs while preserving their core values (Mustapha, 2025). This study evaluates how Islamic religious practices influence social integration in Sagamu, exploring both their benefits in fostering community cohesion and the challenges posed by modern social dynamics.
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized role of Islamic practices in promoting social integration, empirical research on their effectiveness in Sagamu is limited. Rapid urbanization and increasing cultural diversity pose challenges to traditional forms of social cohesion. While Islamic rituals are designed to unite the community, it remains unclear whether they can adequately address social fragmentation in a rapidly changing environment. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of Islamic religious practices on social integration, identifying both their strengths and limitations, and offering recommendations to enhance community unity in Sagamu.
